The magic of J.K Rowling’s imagination is undeniable, given how Harry Potter has become an indelible presence in many of our lives today. Sadly, we muggles might never receive our Hogwarts letter like Hermione Granger, but we sure can recreate the magic of the sweet confections found in Hogsmeade.
We promise you that these simple muggle-made marvels are easy, and do not need much artistry. Some might take more time than the others, though, but in the end, it’ll all be worth it.
1. Cauldron Cakes
Harry bought these from the Hogwarts Express food trolley, shared them with Ron to break the ice, and the world changed in that moment. This is precisely the moment we were introduced to the fandom, and these sweet treats are exactly how you would imagine them to be‚ a chocolate cake with green goo oozing from the center.
The Recipe
Serving Size: 1-2 people per cauldron cake
Ingredients:
- Flour- Maida (1/4 cup)
- Salt (1/4 teaspoon)
- Baking powder (1/4 teaspoon)
- Sugar (1/4 cup)
- Vegetable oil (2 tablespoons)
- Buttermilk (2 tablespoons)
- Vanilla extract (1/4 teaspoon)
- Optional: chocolate chips, cinnamon, ginger
- Green food coloring
Instructions:
- Whisk all the ingredients together, adding the chocolate chips, cinnamon and ginger towards the end.
- Pour the batter into small silicone cauldron molds and bake for 15-20 minutes.
- Go for buttercream, cream cheese frosting, to which green food coloring has been added for the center filling.
- Garnishes like sprinkles can be added to resemble bubbling potions inside the cauldrons.
2. Butterbeer Cupcakes
Butterbeer is a non-alcoholic drink and a huge hit among Hogwarts students, especially in the colder winter months. What could be better than butterbeer, especially when it’s in the form of a mini cupcake?
The Recipe
Serving Size: Each cupcake serves 1 person
Ingredients:
- 1 cup flour (maida)
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup butterscotch syrup
- 1/4 cup milk
Frosting:
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup butterscotch syrup
Instructions:
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, powdered sugar and salt. Add beaten butter and sugar into the mix and add eggs and, vanilla. Mix well.
- Scoop the batter into the lined muffin cups.
- Bake for 15-18 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool completely.
- Make the frosting by beating the butter until fluffy. Beat in the powdered sugar and butterscotch syrup until smooth.
- Frost the cupcakes and serve.
3. Chocolate Frogs
Remember the jumping frog that escaped out of the window of the Hogwarts Express? If you're still cradling that sense of loss as to how that frog might've tasted, bake your own! The best part is, these won't hop away into the wilderness.
The Recipe
Serving Size: 1 chocolate frog per person
Ingredients:
- 250 gm milk chocolate or dark chocolate, melted
- 250 gm marshmallows, chopped
- 1/2 cup roasted peanuts (optional)
- Googly eyes
Instructions:
- Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Set aside.
- In a medium saucepan, melt the chocolate over low heat, stirring constantly until smooth. Remove from heat.
- Add the chopped marshmallows and peanuts (optional) to the melted chocolate. Stir until well combined.
- Scoop tablespoonfuls of the chocolate mixture and roll into balls with your hands. Place on the prepared baking tray. If you have a frog mold, that's even better, put your mixture in the mold in case you have it.
- Add the googly eyes on the frogs. (They must ideally be edible. If not, please don’t eat them.)
- Refrigerate for 1-2 hours, until firm, before serving.
4. Treacle Tart
This rich English tart is delicious with a soft caramel custard core and a crisp crust. Harry Potter's favorite dessert is now within your fingertips with this recipe!
The Recipe
Serving Size: 4-6 people
Ingredients:
- 1 cup flour (maida)
- 1/2 cup butter, chilled and cut into pieces
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 cup treacle/molasses
- 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour and butter using your fingertips until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in the powdered sugar, milk and mix until a dough forms.
- Shape into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to fit a 20cm pie plate. Transfer to the pie plate. Trim edges.
- In a saucepan, heat the treacle, ginger and cinnamon over low heat, stirring constantly, until the treacle is runny. Pour into the pastry case.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until the crust is golden brown. Allow to cool completely before slicing.
5. Chocolate Wands

The Recipe
Serving Size: 1 wand per person
Ingredients:
- 250 gm chocolate (you can use milk chocolate or dark chocolate)
- 1/2 cup sprinkles or crushed biscuits for decorating
- Biscuit sticks
Instructions:
- In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, powdered sugar, butter and cocoa powder.
- Slowly stir in the milk and vanilla until a dough forms.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a log about 1/2 inch thick.
- Cut the log into 1/2 inch pieces to form "wands". You can also use a knife to taper one end of each piece to resemble a wand tip.
- Place the wands on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 180°C for 10-12 minutes, until the tops are set.
- Allow to cool down completely before decorating with desired icing or sprinkles.
