7 Harry Potter-Themed Birthday Cakes That Even The Muggles Can Make With Ease

Tap into your inner wizard as you replicate the Quidditch pitch on your cake. Or even the grumpy Hogwarts Sorting Hat, or an ‘unofficial’ Hogwarts house. It is sure to please any diehard Harry Potter fan.

‘Allohomora’ your way into the legacy of Hogwarts by making a cake that reflects the essence of the magical world of Harry Potter. Fancy a screaming Mandrake or the Weasleys’ flying car that crashed into the Whomping Willow? These Harry Potter Cake ideas can be made by experts and beginners alike. But brownie points to you if you are into art and sculpting. Then you can readily try your hand at hyper-realistic cakes.

Worry not, for there are plenty of ideas just waiting to be explored, whether you are house Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff.

1. Hogwarts Castle Cake

What’s better than making the whole castle that houses the students of Hogwarts and their endless magic? If you are hosting a big party, going all out is the way to go for this one. You will need at least two tiers to erect the towers and buildings. If an intricate version is your plan, go for smaller cake layers and carve designs on them. Frosting, fondant icing, and puffed rice can help you with the finer details.

2. The Hogwarts Sorting Hat Cake

The grumpy old hat will use a lot of fondant icing, with a similar cake layering used for the castle cake. The expressions and creases on the old magical hat are key to making a cake. If making a ginormous hat in chocolate is too much, make a small witch hat and add some fondant to replicate the grumpy guy. Put this hat on a chocolate cake base, and you’re done!

3. Happy Birthday Harry Cake

Remember the cake Hagrid gave Harry on his 11th birthday with the pink frosting and green letters? That weird pink chocolate cake has become synonymous with the Harry Potter universe. This is a lazy man’s cake, and if you are like Hagrid, this is a perfect birthday cake, if presented with a couple of candles on top. Don’t forget to spell out “Happee Birthdae Harry” in true Rubeus Hagrid style.

4. Monster Book of Monsters Cake

Unlike the original book, this one won’t bite and actually tastes sweet when you take a bite of it. Bake or buy your own rectangular cake. The rest can be done with fondant icing. With this one, you can do some of your own magic in replicating the shaggy exterior of the rabid monster book. Don’t forget the crazy eyes, teeth, and tongue!

5. Hogwarts House Cake

What better way to celebrate one’s special day with one’s own official house? Be it the brave Gryffindor, Sly Slytherins, Wise Ravenclaws, or Earnest Hufflepuffs, each house is special to its members. This one is one of the easiest to make. If you don’t want to trouble yourself with designing with the icing, grab some merchandise for the houses and stick them onto a cake.

6. Golden Snitch Cake

There are two ways of doing this. If you go the easy way, stick a chocolate ball wrapped in golden aluminum foil on a circular cake. Make sure you attach the trademark snitch wings to it. Fake ones should also be okay. If you wish to go all out, then you will need three or four layers of cake to form half a hemisphere. Put your favorite fillings in between; put yellow frosting on top and design the golden carvings on the snitch. Attach wings as the finishing touch, which could be made with white chocolate, paper, or feathers.

7. The Quidditch Pitch Cake

This one might be tricky to make, and taking shortcuts is a confirmed way to mess it up, so let’s leave this to the pros. However, the time invested will be well worth it.

Frost a large, round cake in white to create the pitch. Use green food coloring to pipe grass around the edges, and make the pitch. If you have small Harry Potter figurines, they can be added, facing each other. Add three black hoops at each end, with the center hoop being a bit taller than the other two. If you add the viewing stands, make sure they come with miniature audience members in their Hogwarts uniforms. Roll yellow fondant into a ball for the Golden Snitch, and add wings. Set these balls near the players and include dark-colored ones for Bludgers.
