Loosely based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, it follows the tale of the Christmas Grinch, played by Barbie, named Eden. Her tale is narrated by the blond, blue-eyed Barbie who is stuck with her petulant sister Kelly on Christmas Eve; the latter refuses to go to a Christmas fundraising party. So, naturally, a tale was weaved rooted in selfishness and how it almost ruined Christmas. Join us as we have fun by waving the proverbial magic wand of the trinity of ghosts, and turn some of the memorable characters of Barbie in A Christmas Carol, into delicious desserts, in another world.
As bitter as the dark chocolate in the cake, Eden Starling is a surprising protagonist who is flawed and almost an anti-hero in the movie, swapping her blue eyes for sparkling bright green eyes. Overnight, on Christmas Eve, she is haunted by three spirits of Christmas – the past, present, and the future which makes her change overnight as she goes through stages of grief. She becomes as sweet as any of the chocolate desserts as her bleak future is shown to her and she zaps back to sweet old Eden that we see when she was a kid singing and making merry with her best friend Catherine.
If you've come across a cat in a medieval painting, you'll know what we mean. The name and the face of this cat match too well; it was as if the cat sneezed too hard and its eyes shrunk and slid comically towards the center of its face. For this snooty cat, we pick one of the Christmas desserts special, sugar cookies, for the cat being too spoilt, or perhaps just being a typical cat, goes nuts when there’s food involved. He even polishes off several packs of frosted cookies meant for the orphans, not to mention trying to eat everything he saw while time traveling.
She's the selfish person who raised and groomed Eden to be a famous singer and taught her rigid values that ended up with her being straddled with chains and clocks in the afterlife, because of her selfish nature. Determined to make her niece turn a new leaf, she comes back as a spirit to help her change. Kind of funny how the trauma giver tries to fix everything even after passing on, but in this case, it does end up with Eden choosing to be her generous self from her childhood years. For the aunt, one of the luxurious chocolate desserts, a chocolate mousse is quite fitting.
With an enthusiastic streak which perhaps was due to the fact she was simply excited to be in the famous Eden’s presence, and also young, she’s a sparkly spirit who yaps a bit too much. Without paying much heed to Eden or her protest, she drags her to her past, which explains why Eden was such a slave driver and acted like the Christmas Grinch. She’s also the reason we get to see the happy child Eden was who loved sledding and spending Christmas with her neighbor’s family. For such a spirited ghost, a tart and sweet lemon muffin with the popping poppy seeds surprise is perfect.
Dressed like a decorated green Christmas tree, she is the second ghost who shows Eden the consequence of the choice Eden had mentally made for the coming present. She wasn’t as kind as the Ghost of Christmas Past and led Eden around to show her the lives of her employees and her childhood friend who has the kindest heart possible. Add an orphanage to the mix and the haughty and snooty star started coming undone at the seams. For this Ghost, one of the staples of Christmas desserts, a Christmas cake studded with dry fruits and nuts is perfect for she was the reminder of what Christmas stands for.
The third and final ghost that visits Eden, finds the cracks in her facade and takes advantage of it by showing her an extreme future that awaits her if she goes through what she planned for Christmas. Safe to say that completely broke Eden and she flips a switch turning into Santa Claus from the Grinch that was the brainchild of her late aunt. That makes this ghost with her plum attire, perfect as a black forest cakewhich shows Eden, the black and white future, just like the cake, with no silver lining for the star. The cherries on the cake hide hope of redemption, a redemption of Eden, and her spirit of kindness and generosity.
Except for the possible future, shown by the Ghost of Christmas Future, Catherine is a sweetheart who never stops believing in her friend. She’s noble and embodies the spirit of kindness that Christmas fosters, going out of her way to make costumes for the kids at the local orphanage and have them sing carols to celebrate. It’s ultimately she who redeems her friend, Eden Starling, and brings back the cheer in both of their lives. For this beautiful character, one of the classic Christmas desserts – gingerbread with its warming character is perfect.
