There are plenty of romance movies out there; some with a happy ending and some taking a more realistic turn, addressing major themes of loss and grief. Whatever the mood calls for, there is a dessert to represent each of them!

Bite Into Your Beloved Romances Through Desserts Mirroring Memorable Moments from Iconic Films

Romance movies are comforting and make you feel all is well, and that there’s someone who has got your back unconditionally. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t, but despite it all, the feel-good element is what makes these movies such hits and a pleasure to watch over and over again.

Some desserts, just like romance movies, are tangy, sweet, and bitter, and linger long after the movie ends such as a heart-shaped cake. Sometimes, they become addictions, like a bar of Cadbury Silk Chocolate that you can’t help but eat over and over because it brings comfort during tough times. So, the next time you watch the following romance movies, bake or buy the desserts such as a strawberry cake we have paired that represent the films to sweeten your movie experience.

1. Notting Hill’s Strawberry Shortcake

This movie is something straight out of a fairy tale and the legitimizing of a teenage fantasy, where an ordinary person gets to live out their wild fantasy of being in love with a famous face and being in mutual love with them. Notting Hill is such a classic tale of Anna (Julia Roberts) falling in love with the bookstore owner William (Hugh Grant), who owns a bookstore where the former visits. More rendezvous ignites the spark that leads to the development of their love story that ultimately persists despite their different shiny versus mundane lives. Like the movie's storybook-esque premise of a famous actress falling for an everyday bookstore owner, strawberry shortcake captures that feeling of an ordinary treat being transformed into something magical.

2. Her’s Apple Crisp

Set in the slightly near future, Her follows Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a heartbroken man who tries to cope in the aftermath of his long-term relationship ending. He develops an unexpected relationship with his new operating system named Samantha (Scarlett Johansson). As she becomes increasingly intelligent and develops her own personality, the two grow very close emotionally and romantically. But it is an ill-fated relationship given the very nature of A.I. and one of her humans, Theodore, who is a client in the bigger scheme of things, so we feel the autumnal apple crisp suits this movie the best. The apple crisp captures the movie’s poignant themes of connection, change, and being left with only remnants of what was succinct.

3. Me Before You’s Cherry Clafoutis

Another almost-impossible love story between an ordinary working-class woman and her filthy rich beau that is hinged on a situation that favors their romance. If not for Will’s (Sam Claflin) accident that left him quadriplegic, Louisa (Emilia Clarke) would have never met Will. The love blossoms naturally as the attentive Will, who barely liked any of his caretakers, starts to admire and seek interest in Louisa and whatever she liked. In an ill-fated relationship from the start, Will and Louisa were not to be. Will’s parents were left heartbroken along with the lovelorn Louisa, when Lousia’s efforts were unable to shake Will’s decision of euthanasia. A cherry clafoutis fits their short-lived romance, as it was sweet and resplendent in the short duration it existed.

4. La La Land’s Fruit Tart

La La Land is a beautifully crafted love letter to Los Angeles and the magic of cinema. It tells the story of Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), two aspiring artists who fall for each other while pursuing their dreams in the city of stars. At its heart, La La Land is a celebration of romance, optimism, and the power of dreams. It captures the giddy rush of new love and the beauty of chasing your passions. The colorful musical numbers are like love songs for the city and the art itself. Like Mia and Sebastian's relationship, it is bright, layered, and full of sweetness. Just as La La Land sweeps you away with its joyous spirit, a fresh fruit tart is a light and lovely treat to share, further enhancing the movie's message of following your heart. The dessert is as beautiful and uplifting as the movie itself.

5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’s Lemon Meringue Tart

This movie is truly unique and thought-provoking. On the surface, it tells the story of Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet) erasing each other from their memories after a breakup. But more profoundly, it explores the nature of relationships, heartbreak, regret, and what we choose to remember or forget about past loves. It poses fascinating questions about identity and how our experiences with others shape who we are. What better than the lemon meringue tart that beautifully captures Eternal Sunshine's exploration of love, loss, and what really makes us human?
