You may or may not know this but Bournvita, the beloved chocolate drink mix that has made milk palatable for all of us in our childhood, was first introduced in India in 1948. There's no surprise why it quickly became a household name across the country, and is still loved by kids and adults alike. For most of us, Bournvita holds a special place in our hearts because of the nostalgia associated with it. So, a sip of Bournvita milk right now will definitely transport you back to simpler times, when all you had to worry about was homework and playtime.

Bournvita makes for a delicious beverage on its own, but the chocolate powder mix is versatile enough to be used in desserts and sweet treats. The rich chocolate flavor paired with sweetness makes it perfect for cakes, cookies, puddings, ice creams, and even cheesecakes.

Here are some delicious recipes that use this cherished chocolate drink powder to its fullest potential:

1. Eggless Bournvita Cake

Ingredients:

For the cake:

  • 240 gm wheat flour
  • 60 gm Bournvita
  • 60 gm white sugar
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 240 ml warm water
  • 1/2 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 45 ml vegetable oil

Bournvita frosting:

  • 120 ml milk
  • 1/2 tsp cornflour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp Bournvita
  • 1 tbsp choco chips

Instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C and grease your cake tin with some vegetable oil.
  • Sift wheat flour, baking soda and salt together first. Then powder the sugar and Bournvita until it's fine. Add this to the dry ingredients.
  • Put the dry ingredients along with the warm water, vanilla essence, vegetable oil, and vinegar in a food processor and blend well.
  • Transfer the cake batter into the prepared cake tin and bake in the oven for 30 to 35 minutes.
  • Let the cake cool down and start preparing the Bournvita frosting.
  • Heat the milk along with cornflour, sugar, and Bournvita. Whisk so you incorporate everything completely.
  • Simmer and let the liquid thicken slightly, then add the choco chips. If you only want the taste of Bournvita, eliminate the choco chips and add more powder.
  • Let the frosting come down to room temperature too, then cover the cake with it. You can use sprinkles or any decorative silver balls as garnish.

2. Bournvita and Baileys Ice Cream

Ingredients:

  • 600 ml double cream
  • 1 can condensed milk
  • 70 gm Bournvita
  • 100 ml Baileys liqueur

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients in a food processor and blend well.
  • Transfer into a freezer-safe container and freeze for 2 hours then give the mixture a good mix. Do this 3 to 4 times every couple of hours, then pop the container for a final freeze overnight.
  • Enjoy this unique, homemade ice cream with some homemade waffle cones.

3. Bournvita Mousse

Ingredients:

  • 300 ml double cream
  • ½ tsp gelatin powder
  • 45 gm Bournvita

Instructions:

  • Heat about 2 teaspoons of water in the microwave and dissolve the gelatin powder in this. Let it cool down completely.
  • Meanwhile, beat the double cream until you get soft peaks. The cream should be chilled, so it does not split when you whip it.
  • Then fold in the gelatin powder water into this along with the Bournvita. Use a spatula, so you do not deflate the whipped cream.

4. Coconut Bournvita Barfi

Ingredients:

  • 200 g freshly grated coconut
  • 200 g sugar
  • 60 ml milk
  • 4 tbsp Bournvita
  • 2 tbsp ghee

Instructions:

  • In a heavy bottomed pan, melt a tablespoon of ghee, then add coconut, sugar, milk, and Bournvita.
  • Keep the flame low and cook this down until you get a thick chunky texture.
  • Then add another tablespoon of ghee.
  • Only take the pan off heat once all of the liquid has been absorbed by the coconut.
  • Grease a thali with some ghee, then evenly spread this mixture.
  • Let it cool, then slice it into squares or diamonds.
  • Garnish with a dusting of Bournvita or some sliced almonds.
