SpongeBob SquarePants is a borderline inappropriate cartoon with plenty of adult jokes hiding in it. But for some reason, a whole generation or two grew up with this cartoon with a catchy ukulele tune opening up the series. We picked SpongeBob, his friends and foes and while he exists in Bikini Bottom with them, for us, we imagined a parallel world where they coexist and much loved and unique desserts.
Whether SpongeBob is a sea sponge or an actual dishwashing sponge, we’ll never know, living in a pineapple house under the sea. The fact he has a whole schoolboy uniform on, makes it all the more stranger. A fruit cake, not the Christmas kind, suits SpongeBob perfectly, whose vibrant color is just like SpongeBob’s eclectic personality. Like the smattering of fruits on top or in the cake, SpongeBob ties the whole cartoon together, with a colorful array of friends and their adventures. The occasional fruity and nutty bits in a fruit cake parallel SpongeBob’s quirky moments and unpredictable antics, making this dessert prefect for him.
Patrick is one of SpongeBob’s neighbors and quite a naive starfish that one can’t help but find endearing as one watches his foolishness. He and SpongeBob are BFFs and equally weird taking turns in angering the grumpy Squidward a lot. A cupcake perfectly embodies Patrick Star’s character, for its simple, straightforward nature mirrors Patrick’s uncomplicated approach to life. Like Patrick’s childlike wonder at everything around him, a cupcake brings joy with its small, cheerful appearance and sweet taste. The single-serving size reflects Patrick’s focus on immediate gratification and living in the moment.
A chocolate chip cookie unexpectedly suits Squidward’s complex character, just like Squidward’s always annoyed and crusty exterior hiding a softer interior, a chocolate chip cookie’s edges tend to be crisp with a chewy center. The scattered chocolate chips represent Squidward’s hidden moments of brilliance and joy he exhibits, amidst his generally grumpy demeanor. Just as a cookie can be dunked in milk to soften it, Squidward occasionally softens when shown kindness or appreciation. He’s an adult, after all, straddled with two dimwit neighbors who keep messing up his daily routine, sleep, stepping into his comport zone and generally driving him bonkers.
A dark chocolate cake perfectly encapsulates Eugene H. Krabs or Mr. Krabs’ character, the owner of the famous diner the Krusty Krab restaurant. Why exactly? The rich, intense flavor mirrors his miserly personality and business acumen, who is always money-minded, like how one tends to get selfish with sharing a slice of dark chocolate pastry. Like the cake’s rich color and density represents his stubborn nature and unwavering focus on profit. Just as dark chocolate has a slight bitterness, Mr. Krabs can be harsh or uncompromising especially towards his employees Squidward or SpongeBob when they goof up. Besides this, he has an underlying sweetness in the cake sweetness reflects his love for his daughter Pearl.
Panna cotta is an ideal dessert match for the slow Gary who is SpongeBob’s pet snail. One of the most refined Italian desserts, the smooth silkiness of the panna cotta, mirrors Gary’s slimy trail and graceful movements. The dessert’s gentle wobble when shaken resembles Gary’s antennae and expressive eyes. Like Gary’s quiet but crucial presence in SpongeBob’s life, panna cotta is a subtle, understated dessert that enhances any meal. Snails are the cats of the underwater world and Gary, of course, meows as a result. He does develop a personality later and does more than meow by then and slide around.
You might have associated this pineapple dessert with SpongeBob, not the evil little scheming one-eyed Plankton but it feels a better fit for the latter. The upside-down nature of the cake reflects Plankton’s tendency to approach situations from an unconventional angle, often with schemes to steal the Krabby Patty formula. The sticky, sweet topping represents his clingy persistence and dedicated attempts at manipulation. The pineapple rings with the cherry in them, symbolize his single eye, always watching out for opportunities to strike.
A Texan squirrel who for some reason lives underwater, with a full bubbleheaded suit to boot, and lives in an air-packed tree dome, Sandy Cheeks seeks thrill in life. She sports a Southern accent and loves adventure sports, and it’s hardly a surprise she’s a scientist for the diving suit and her home is her creations. She’s also a martial arts expert, a part of the girl gang with Pearl among her friends, and also with more cool hobbies and interests. Despite it all she’s a sweetheart and a friendly to SpongeBob.
