When it comes to chocolate, there has been an age-old debate about whether or not dark chocolate is better than white chocolate. Although everyone has their own subjective preferences, there are some objective realities that make one win above the other, by virtue of its taste, health benefits, texture, and feasibility for being whipped up in different unique and interesting desserts. You must have had a taste of both, and may even have your preferences set. In the following recipes, you will find out for yourself how to give rise to dark chocolate desserts and what happens when they are substituted with white chocolate. By the end, you are sure to have formed a clear idea regarding which the healthier alternative is.

Dark Chocolate Soufflé

Ingredients:

  • 250 gm Bournville dark chocolate
  • 122 gm confectioner’s sugar
  • 125 gm plain flour
  • 300 ml milk
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 3 egg whites
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  2. Melt dark chocolate chips in a double boiler.
  3. In another bowl, mix together sugar, flour, and whole milk.
  4. To the mixture, add egg yolks, and whisk it until smooth.
  5. Then, you can fold the melted chocolate into the milk mixture.
  6. After that, you will have to beat egg whites to form stiff peaks.
  7. Next, you can fold in the whipped egg whites with the chocolate mixture.
  8. You will have to grease a soufflé dish, and then pour the batter into it, and let it bake for 35-40 minutes.
  9. Once out of the oven, you can serve it warm with some powdered sugar on top.

For the white chocolate soufflé, you can use white chocolate chips instead of dark chocolate chips, and add 1 tsp lemon zest for more flavor.

It is important to note that replacing dark chocolate with white can make the soufflé somewhat excessively sweet, reducing its depth of taste, and thereby affecting the richness and indulgence.

Dark Chocolate Tart

Ingredients:

  • 250 gm Bournville dark chocolate
  • 120 gm butter
  • 200 gm powdered sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 sheet puff pastry

Method:

  1. First, you have to preheat the oven to 180°C.
  2. Then, you need to roll out the puff pastry.
  3. You are going to melt dark chocolate chips in a double boiler.
  4. Then, beat together butter, sugar and eggs in a bowl.
  5. You can then fold the combination into the butter mixture and melted chocolate.
  6. You have to pour the batter into the pastry shell and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  7. Before serving, you can top with some whipped cream to give the tarts a beautiful look, and an elevated taste.

In the white chocolate tarts, you just have to use white chocolate chips instead of dark chocolate, and 1 tsp orange zest to taste. You can add less sugar because white chocolate is already sweet. The resultant is a dessert that, even though tasty, lacks a certain depth, and can become watery unless it is carefully made. The consistency of the dessert is not as dense as the one made with dark chocolate.

Dark Chocolate Truffles

Ingredients:

  • 251 gm dark chocolate
  • 122 gm butter
  • 123 gm sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Cocoa powder

Method:

  1. You have to start by melting dark chocolate chips in a double boiler.
  2. In another bowl, you have to mix together butter, sugar, and eggs.
  3. Then, you can fold in the melted chocolate with the buttery mixture.
  4. You have to wait until the mixture is refrigerated for about 2 hours.
  5. After that, you can roll it into balls with the help of your palms.
  6. After rolling out the trifles, you can dust them with cocoa powder, and serve.

For the white chocolate truffles, besides replacing the dark chocolate with the white one, you also have to add 1 tsp of coconut flakes for flavor.

Although the white chocolate ones tend to be richer than the dark chocolate truffles, their richness can turn to an excessive edge, giving you a treat that is too sweet to be tolerated by most palates.

You can add different types of nuts or fruit to create different textures and flavors for the treats.

When it comes to health benefits, dark chocolate is widely known to be rich in antioxidants and flavonoids. The dark chocolate calories are comparatively much lower than white chocolate.

Resultantly, it improves the health of the heart and reduces blood pressure levels. Additionally, magnesium, copper, and iron are also found in dark chocolate.

To sum it up, if you are worried about consuming excess sugar or fats that are intrinsically unhealthy in nature, your best bet is dark chocolate.

For generations, it has been used in homestyle recipes as a better substitute for white chocolate and other milk chocolate options. With these desserts, you can leave your worries aside and just dig into the indulgent treats.
