The gentle blue octopus with his polite magician's hat, might not conjure any white rabbits or birds from his hat, but one has to agree that Oswald was one of the most comforting cartoons ever we grew up with. Now several years later, it's a reality for some adults who, like Oswald, are quite attached to their friends and despite their eccentricities love them all the same. If this sounds unfamiliar, this is your reminder to reconnect with your long-lost friends. Let’s relive nostalgia through some classic desserts that suit the characters from the Oswald cartoon, like second skin and will make you want to order in or make your own desserts.
1. Blueberry Pie – Oswald
Just like his presence, this gentle giant looks like a walking stuffed toy who is quite careful, and thoughtful and loves having fun. He is the epitome of the slow life, which is pronounced more through his movements and his almost daily interactions with Buster, the turtle who he interacts with on the stairs while going out of his apartment. His wholesome character and gentle ways, even during panicky situations ooze comfort exactly like the pie’s taste. Where else will you see a blue octopus with a tophat hosting a mini dinner party for snails, who ate the tomatoes he had painstakingly cared for? The mini restaurant he created had an awning, lights, tables and all. That felt like an absolute indulgence, but the empath that this Octopus is, it felt like such a luxury that brings a smile to your face when you bite a warm pie topped with cream.
2. Eclair – Weenie
Weenie is feisty and although we only hear her woofs, it is enough to determine her moods and the fact that she has Oswald wrapped around her little paws. She looks exactly like a hotdog and kind of like the choux pastry Eclair does she not? Eclair usually has chocolate and that in Weenie’s case symbolises her loyalty and affection that stands out like the chocolate glaze on this dessert. She keeps Oswald grounded when he tends to get carried away.
3. Chocolate Chip Cookie – Henry
This is your cue to bake a batch, following the best chocolate chip cookie recipe that there is for the tradition-compulsive Henry, who is a penguin and has the feel of a warm cookie. He is quite different from the easy-going Oswald or the cheery Daisy and a creature of habit and almost seems to be a part of the home he lives in. Just like how chocolate chip cookies belong with a glass of milk. He does sometimes break out of his habit-hardened shell and we see him having fun outside his home with his friends.
4. Lemon Tart – Daisy
She's sunshine and everything the flower daisy would be if it would act like a human. The fresh and cherry lemony flavor of the lemon curd in a lemon tart highlights her infectious energy rollerblading around town, jumping on a pogo stick or surfing and being best friends to Henry and Oswald. These three get along like peas in a pod when though their personalities are anything but similar.
5. Mochi – Madam Butterfly
Cut a mochi in half and you'll be intrigued enough to bite into one of the best Asian desserts ever. Madam Butterfly is the owner of the local diner that she runs single-handedly while caring for her little caterpillar, Catrina. Her diner is a hotspot for the local customers to gather and sometimes the main characters too. She's a wise counsel who many turn to and with one bite of the mochi, you'd want more of it because of its earthy and comforting flavor.
6. Brownie – Johnny the Snowman
The snowman who sells ice creams in the little town is a wise counsel to Oswald, lowkey like a good therapist, being a gentle counsel to Oswald often. One bite into a brownie reveals the depth of the chocolatey flavors it holds in its bosom, which might make you want to look up amazing chocolate brownie recipe, right away. Johnny keeps learning and loves sharing his wisdom much like a rich brownie with its luxurious taste.
7. Butterscotch Cake – Bingette Bunny
A scatterbrained grey bunny who acts before she can hear complete sentences, Bingette Bunny’s shop aesthetics were everything and Oswald would head over to her shop to buy tools, plants, and utilities for his little home. She has a friendly appearance and treats her customers with as much love as she showers on her own daughter. She's smooth and comforting like a butterscotch cake with the crunchy elements signifying her absent-mindedness.
