Channel these actresses’s most iconic roles with desserts tailored to those looks. Turn on some Bollywood music, pick your favorite look, and start recreating it on a dessert.
Bollywood entertains and excites audiences across not just the country, but the world. From unforgettable movies to iconic songs, it creates memories and gives us a reason to celebrate. Here, we look at the most famous looks of top Bollywood actresses over the years, and assigning them a dessert each.
Deepika Padukone is among the most successful actors in Bollywood today, at the top of her game. Although she has several hit movies and many iconic characters and looks, one among those that stands out is her deep blue saree in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’s “Badtameez Dil”. The electric blue saree became a breakout statement and could be found in many wardrobes across the country for years afterwards. Inspired by that look, create a blueberry cheesecake. The trick is to add some blue food coloring to the body of the cheesecake and top it with some fresh blueberries. And mimicking the saree’s gold border, use edible glitter to line the edges of the cake.
Easily one of Chopra’s most iconic looks is her white and silver saree in Dostana’s “Desi Girl”. As she moves to the upbeat and fun song, she creates ripples among audiences who are swept away by her look and dance. The catchy song, for a long time after it first came out, became an anthem in a way, reinforcing pride in our culture and clothing. To honor this look, bake vanilla cupcakes with a white buttercream frosting. Then pull out some edible silver glitter and sprinkle it generously all over the frosting, covering most of the frosting swirls with the shiny glitter.
Of the many iconic roles Kapoor Khan has played, two that stand out are her roles of Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and Geet from Jab We Met. We chose to go with the latter. To mimic her several endearing looks from the movie, create different colored cake pops—white, for her train look; pink and orange for her look in “Nagada Nagada;” black, for “Mauja Hi Mauja,” you get the idea. Simply create white cake pops and cover them in colorful fondant. Or, easier still, top the white cake pops with colorful decorations corresponding to her many looks.
Rai Bachchan was perhaps the most difficult for us to choose one look for. There’s her standout performance in Jodhaa Akbar, her delicate and dainty looks in Taal, her sleek clothing in Dhoom 2, and her sultry allure in Bunty Aur Babli’s “Kajra Re”. After much deliberation, we chose to go with the last. Create a delicious vanilla panna cotta and once it's set and ready to be served, transfer it onto a plate. Then top it with edible red and purple flowers, mimicking the iconic skirt and blouse she’s wearing in the song. Top it off with some edible gold glitter and you're good to go.
Alia Bhatt is known to deliver one splendid performance after the other. Among her latest hits is her portrayal of Gangubai Kathiawadi, but the white sarees don't give us room for a lot of creativity for our desserts. So instead, we chose to go with Student of the Year, the actress’s debut. Her many fancy looks in the film can be imitated with some delicious macarons, which together will create an impressive macaron tower. Think solid colors like blue, red and pink, and lighter colors like white, baby pink and so on. Sprinkle some edible glitter on top and your tower is complete.
One of Vidya’s most impressive roles comes in the film Dirty Picture. The brilliance with which she plays the part of Silk Smitha left audiences mesmerized by her talent and commitment. To commemorate that look, create a silky and decadent chocolate cake, with multiple layers and a rich, indulgent frosting sandwiched between each layer. Channel the boldness and strength of her role by making a strong statement with your dessert. Top it with colorful, star-shaped decorations recalling her character’s magnanimous personality. Finally, add some of the decorations on the side of the cake as well, a hat tip to Vidya’s talent and range as an actor.
