From aliens to UFOs and galaxies to black holes, the world of outer space is vast and endless. So are the possibilities when creating a space themed cake.

Space is fascinating, vast and endless. Thinking about it is a sure way of humbling yourself and reminding yourself of your insignificance—you know, in a good way, in the grand scheme of things kind of way. There’s so little we know about it, and yet there’s a whole universe out there. So while our inspired cakes can be imitations of what we’ve seen or recall certain phenomena, it can also be completely strange and only limited by your imagination. Because, no matter what you come up with, until we’ve explored literally all of the universe, there’s always the possibility that you aren't entirely wrong! So the next time you have to design an outer space-inspired cake, be it for a birthday or a space themed party, remember that there’s endless possibilities. Here are a few humble ideas from our side.

1. Galactic Marble Cake

Create a marbled effect on the cake by pouring different colors onto it from a height. Use vibrant cosmic colors like deep blues, purples, and of course, black. Add swirls and other abstract designs onto the cake for a galaxy-inspired feel. Add edible glitter and edible star-shaped confetti to mimic stars and galaxies. Then, use fondant to create constellations and planets in different colors and sizes, and stick them up onto toothpicks, resembling colorful cake pops.

2. Solar System Cake

Craft a cake that represents the solar system. Bake a standard cake, perhaps with blue and purple swirled food coloring. Cover it entirely with black fondant. On top, in the correct order, add fondant planets, starting with mercury, in a clockwise order. Make sure the planets are the correct colors, including details like Saturn’s rings and Neptune’s bluish hue. You could use food coloring and a brush or spray-on to create gas patterns for each planet. Don't forget to put the sun in the middle of it all! And on the sides of the cake, add white stars with edible spray paint.

3. Rocket Ship Cake

Design a rocket ship cake that looks like it's soaring through the stars. For this, bake a round cake, and carve out some chunks from the middle part. Place a fondant-made rocket at the center, and cover the rest of the cake with black fondant, so it looks like the rocket is flying through space. Add flames at the bottom to reference propulsion and around the sides, add stars and planets to give a feel of outer space.

4. Nebula Cake

Inspired by the colorful clouds of interstellar gas and dust, a nebula cake features vibrant, swirling colors. Use an airbrush or food coloring to blend shades of pinks, purples, and blues on the cake's surface, which should be covered in black fondant. Add edible silver or gold dust to create a shimmering effect, mimicking the ethereal beauty of nebulae. Add a few bright stars as well, and perhaps the moon or another planet shining distinctly in the distance.

5. Alien Planet Cake

Imagine a cake that represents an alien world with unique flora and fauna. Bake a circular cake, pick a base color of your choice for the fondant that will cover it, and use a variety of colorful fondants to create imaginative plants, rocks, and creatures. Incorporate LED lights within the cake to create an otherworldly glow, making the alien planet come to life. If your imagination is really running wild, also add fondant-made creatures resembling aliens.

6. Astronaut Cake

Bake a cake and cover it in black fondant. Then make the figure of an astronaut using more fondant. Take some sticks or toothpicks, place them onto the cake in a slight angle to create the effect of them floating through space. Put the birthday person’s name on the back of the astronaut’s suit. Add details like the visor reflecting stars, the Earth, or the moon. Complete the cake with stars and galaxies shining all over.

7. UFO Abduction Cake

Craft a playful cake depicting a UFO beaming up a cow or any other object. Bake a base cake, then add a transparent glass jar in the middle, followed by adding another cake on top. The cake at the bottom should be earth, with grass or any other detail you choose. The glass cylinder should have the cow or whatever object you want beamed up, made in fondant. The upper cake should use fondant to look like a UFO.
