Disney movies have a magical way of taking you into their world with their captivating stories, delightful visuals, and memorable characters. Among the many things that are unforgettable in Disney films are the desserts. They’ve played a significant role in the narrative, and have added an element of enchantment. Here’s how you can make Disney inspired simple cake recipes in your kitchen.

Grey Stuff from The Beauty and the Beast

Who can forget the “grey” stuff from The Beauty and the Beast where anthropomorphic candle Lumiere presents Belle with a tray of hors d'oeuvres and asks her to try this particular dish. Realizing that it doesn’t exactly sound appetizing he adds, “Don’t believe me? Ask the dishes!” Belle, however, doesn’t hesitate to try the grey stuff and seems quite delighted by its taste. We aren’t sure whether the grey stuff is sweet or salty, but according to Disney it is a dessert. They released a recipe that you can try.

Ingredients:

  • 360 ml milk
  • 96 g instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 15 Oreo cookies
  • 227 g sweetened whipped cream
  • 1 tbsp instant chocolate pudding mix
  • Scalloped cookies

Instructions:

  • Add the milk into a large mixing bowl, then add the instant vanilla pudding mix. Whisk until smooth.
  • Blend the Oreos into a sand-like texture in a food processor.
  • Then add the cookie crumbs into the vanilla pudding mix.
  • Next comes the chocolate pudding mix.
  • Then fold the whipped cream into the bowl.
  • Let the mixture chill and thicken in the fridge for about 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Put the grey stuff into a piping bag, then artfully frost it over scalloped butter cookies.

Beignets from Princess and the Frog

There are plenty of scenes that feature beignets and gumbo, which are a heavy part of New Orleans cooking. In the movie Disney Princess Tiana dreams of having her own restaurant, and she whips up these delicious beignets that are basically yeasted fried dough, generously dusted with powdered sugar. Fun fact: they are the official doughnut of Louisiana, where New Orleans is located. Tiana adds her own spin to these beignets – a drizzle of honey.

Ingredients:

  • 344 g flour
  • 240 ml warm milk
  • 100 g granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 room temperature egg
  • 4 tbsp melted butter (unsalted)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  • Add the warm milk to a bowl along with 2 tablespoons of sugar and all of the yeast. Mix and let this mixture sit for 5 minutes. When you see the milk get frothy, you’ll know that the yeast has bloomed.
  • Transfer into a large mixing bowl, and add egg, the rest of the sugar, butter, salt, and vanilla extract.
  • Whisk this well so that the sugar dissolves into the liquid.
  • Then add one tablespoon of flour at a time and keep whisking. You will eventually get a dough.
  • The dough needs to be elastic and smooth, and not sticky or crumbly. You can adjust the proportions of flour and milk depending on what your dough looks like.
  • Once you get the dough right, drop it in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rest for two hours so it can double in size.
  • Once the dough has risen, punch out the air from it.
  • Lightly flour your work surface, drop the dough on it and roll the dough into a rectangle that’s around ½ inch thick.
  • Cut 1-2 inch squares out of this rectangle. Then fry them in hot vegetable oil.
  • Dont overcrowd your vessel else the beignets will not cook evenly.
  • Once done, drain on a kitchen towel then drizzle with honey. Finally, dust with a lot of powdered sugar. Serve warm.
