It is a lovely sauce with a great flavor thanks to the dark rum. The sauce is known for its buttery texture with a caramel-like taste. The best part? It is made with simple ingredients like sugar, cream, rum, and butter.
1 tablespoon dark rum
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup heavy whipping cream
½ cup granulated sugar
½ cup butter
In a saucepan, combine all of the ingredients and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce is slightly thickened and coats the back of a spoon.
Take the pan off the heat. Allow it to cool for 30 minutes; it will thicken more as it cools.
1. For a stronger rum or liquor flavor, wait until the last 30 seconds of boiling, then add the rum. But be careful if it starts to boil.
2. Refrigerate any unused (and cooled) butter rum sauce in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. A mason jar is ideal.
