Chocolate Orange Cream Cake
Ingredients:
- 251 gm plain flour
- 202 gm granulated sugar
- 63 gm Cadbury cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- A pinch of salt
- 251 ml milk
- 122 ml vegetable oil
- 3 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 202 gm whole cream
- 103 gm powdered sugar
- 2 tsp orange zest
- 203 gm Bournville dark chocolate (chopped)
- 124 ml full-fat cream
- 2 tsp unsalted butter
Method:
- To prepare the cake, you first have to preheat your oven to 180°C. You need to check whether the oven racks are readjusted to the middle for an equal baking time.
- In a medium bowl, you will combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. You need to properly sift these dry ingredients to ensure that they are well combined and aerated.
- You will take a large mixing bowl, and in it, whisk together whole milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and pure vanilla extract. At this step, you need to ensure that wet ingredients are thoroughly whisked until smooth and well combined.
- Then, you can add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients in a gradual manner, whisking to just combine. You are advised to not overmix the batter as this tends to result in a very dense cake.
- After that, you are going to divide the batter between two round cake pans. You can also smooth the tops of the batter and tap the pans gently to remove any air bubbles.
- Next, you need to allow the cakes to bake for 30 to 35 minutes. It would be great if you can rotate the pans halfway through baking time for even baking.
- Then, you will take the cakes out of the oven and cool them in pans for 10 minutes. After that, you can transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Next, you can move on to the orange cream filling. For that, you have to take a medium-sized bowl, and whisk together heavy cream, granulated sugar, and grated orange zest. Ideally, the mixture should be smooth with stiff peaks.
- To assemble the cake, you are going to place one of the cooled cakes on a serving plate and spread a thick layer of orange cream filling over the top of the cake.
- Then, you can gently place the second cake on top of the filling and dust the top of the cake with powdered sugar.
- Now, you have to prepare the chocolate ganache by melting the chopped Bournville dark chocolate, full-fat cream, and unsalted butter in a small saucepan. You need to heat the mixture slowly over low heat, whisking constantly, until it's smooth and well mixed.
- Then, you will gradually pour the chocolate ganache over the top of the cake.
- You need to hold on to your desire to dig into the cake for a bit and store the cake in the refrigerator.
- After around 25 minutes, the beautiful cake is ready to cut and serve. Additionally, you can top it with more orange zest or shaved chocolate, if you desire.
With this chocolate orange cream cake recipe, you will be able to create a decadent dessert perfect for special occasions or for those times that make you feel that life is too short for anything else but sweet indulgence. It is an elegant dessert that can be served at parties or brunches, and showcases one of the finest seasonal produce by combining it with just the right amount of sweetness.
