For over several decades, action movies have thrilled audiences with jaw-dropping stunts, explosive set pieces, and charismatic heroes taking on impossible odds. From the early silent films to today's blockbuster franchises, the genre continues to push the limits of spectacle and adrenaline. Many of these high-octane classics have become ingrained in our popular culture over generations.
But we are not talking about the cult classics, at least not just yet. We will take a detour and follow the pulse-racing car chases through crowded city streets, a certain superhero who is too cool to be a mortal among others. Some of these sometimes come with a thought-provoking ending. So, while you chew and ponder over these movies and stress eat through the intense fight scenes, we have some desserts that capture these films quite well.
1. Kung Fu Hustle’s Tartlets
This action-comedy flick (2004) is equal parts entertainment of the rolling on-the-floor kind and quite a nail-biting nervousness inducer. With the villain, The Beast (Siu-Lung Leung), quite literally expanding and croaking like a live frog and bashing people’s skulls in and pulverizing bones, and the way the protagonist (Stephen Chow) brings him to his knees is something worth watching especially the poignant scene, a couple of minutes before the epilogue. The supporting cast is equally amazing, with their appearance and clothing ranging from ramshackle to polished suits and boots. Tartlets with whipped cream and different toppings will best suit this fun film! The colors might be missing in most parts of the film, but the hilariously entertaining scenes packed with martial arts make up for it.
2. The Fast and the Furious’s Energy Bars
Street racing became cool with the Fast and Furious franchise, with Dom (Vin Diesel) and Brian (Paul Walker) getting the best of their zoomies with their sports cars. Dom’s character was behind the ‘family’ dialogue that is a ranging meme even now. Things are not the same after Brian announces his retirement from the franchise. They probably did this to honor Paul Walker’s passing, and therein comes the iconic end scene where Dom and Brian ride off into the two-fork road, each taking a different path. Donuts with dark chocolate icing or glaze suit this franchise the best, with the fast-paced nature of the film and the bittersweet events that also took place in it.
3. Iron Man’s Red Velvet Cake
This movie launched the global popularity of the Marvel cinematic universe in 2008 with Robert Downey Jr. on the steering wheel. Suave and smooth Tony Stark a.k.a Iron Man, who has the genius brains and the iconic tin man suit managed by the all-powerful artificial intelligence assistant Jarvis. If this isn’t a rich, genius bad-boy-meets-superhero who falls in love with his assistant with the ridiculous name (Wattpad fanfics anyone?) fever dream, then we don’t know what is.
The best dessert inspiration is an absolute no-brainer. Any guesses? Why, it's the red velvet cake of course! Why? Well, because Tony is known for his… err… colorful lifestyle, so we are hazarding a guess that if Pepper Potts offered this cake to him he would happily eat it like an overjoyed little puppy.
4. The Matrix
The Matrix films revolutionized science fiction and visual effects when they debuted in the late 1990s, throwing audiences' minds into chaos. Director Lilly Wachowski and Lana Wachowski crafted a mind-boggling concept about reality being simulated by intelligent machines. Protagonist Neo (played by Keanu Reeves) is awakened to the truth by Morpheus and Trinity. Through kung fu-filled action and dizzying effects, Neo comes to understand that nothing is what it seems. Of the desserts inspired by The Matrix trilogy, a marble cake suits it particularly well. Just as the films toy with the blurring of reality and illusion, a marble cake blends two colors together seamlessly yet distinctively.
5. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
This 2022 film celebrates everything that is Nicolas Cage, and includes a not-so-subtle reference to his evergreen movies. This film pairs the actor with the Internet’s current favorite ‘daddy’ Pedro Pascal, who plays Javi Gutierrez. Throw in miscommunication, existentialism, dysfunction, bromance and the dark miasma of mafia ties, and you have a nice entertainer that will sort your afternoon, morning or night. This movie is best represented by a box of macarons! There is plenty of action—from the physical fistfights to gun fights, to mentally exasperating fights that are borderline hair-tearing. All of that is best represented by the party-in-your-mouth French macarons; enjoy Javi’s elite hospitality on screen as you omnomnom your way into a sublime macaron.
