Delish Dessert Recipes Inspired by Disney’s Sleeping Beauty: Try These at Home!

Disney’s Sleeping Beauty is a beloved animated classic that continues to captivate audiences ever since it first released in 1959. The original medieval stories that the movie is based on are haunting tales, Disney has given it a more palatable appeal. Remember the lopsided birthday cake design with frosting the three fairies made for Aurora? Why not recreate that and more to celebrate this enduring classic, and host a Sleeping Beauty themed watch party with friends, family, or kids? A themed party can bring the magic of the movie, so you can create lasting memories. Here are some delish dessert recipes that will make your evening all the more interesting:

Aurora’s Birthday Cake

Ingredients:

For the cake:

  • 180 g flour
  • 190 g granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/3 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 80 ml vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 120 ml milk

For the frosting:

  • 226 g softened butter
  • 720 g icing sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp almond extract
  • 2 tbsp blackberry jam
  • 40 g whole blueberries
  • Few drops of blue food coloring

Instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 176 C and then whisk together all of the dry ingredients in a bowl.
  • In another bowl, add the two eggs, vegetable oil, vinegar, and milk.
  • Incorporate the dry ingredients in batches into the wet mixture well. You should get a smooth and lump free batter.
  • Grease a 6 inch baking tin and pour the batter into it.
  • Bake the cake for 55 minutes, and check for doneness by inserting a wooden skewer or toothpick into it. If it comes out clean, it’s cooked through.
  • Allow the cake to cool down in the tin for about 5 to 10 minutes, then extract it and cool on a wire rack.
  • Once completely fool, slice the cake into three layers.
  • Then start working on the blue frosting by whipping the softened butter along with the icing sugar.
  • Then incorporate the blue food coloring and the blackberry jam as well.
  • Finally, add the blueberries and give this another whisk.
  • Start assembling the cake by spreading a layer of frosting on the bottom slice. Repeat this step again.
  • Spread all of the remaining frosting on the top most layer and decorate with some more blueberries.
  • Let it chill in the fridge before you bring it out to serve your guests.

Maleficent's Dark Chocolate Bark

Ingredients:

  • 300 g dark chocolate, roughly chopped
  • 50 g white chocolate, roughly chopped
  • Green and purple food coloring (gel food coloring works best)
  • Edible stars or glitter for decoration

Instructions:

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or use a silicone baking mat.
  • Chop the dark chocolate roughly and place it in a microwave-safe bowl.
  • Microwave in 30-second intervals, and mix to ensure that it is completely melted.
  • Pour and spread the melted dark chocolate on the baking sheet. The ideal thickness should be 1/4 of an inch.
  • Melt the white chocolate similarly, then divide it into two bowls.
  • Add green food coloring to one bowl and purple to another. Mix well.
  • Using a spoon, drizzle the colored white chocolate over the dark chocolate in a random pattern.
  • You can also use a toothpick or a skewer to further swirl the colors together for a marbled effect.
  • Immediately dust with edible glitter or decorate with edible starts.
  • Let the chocolate set in the fridge for an hour then break it into pieces.
  • Arrange on a platter and serve.

Flora, Fauna and Merryweather’s Wand Cookies

Ingredients:

For the cookies:

  • 375 g flour
  • 230 g room temperature, unsalted butter
  • 200 g granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Water to combine

For the sugar icing:

  • 450 g confectioners’ sugar
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  • Beat together sugar and butter until pale and fluffy.
  • Add the egg and the vanilla extract to this.
  • Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Incorporate the dry ingredients into the creamed butter, and some water and mix until you get a firm dough.
  • Flatten the dough into a circular shape, wrap in cling film, and refrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 180 C, then roll out the cookie dough on a lightly floured surface. Keep the thickness to your liking.
  • Cut out cookies in the shape of wands using a knife.
  • Arrange the cookies on a lined baking sheet and then bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until light golden.
  • Let them cool down completely on a wire rack.
  • In the meantime, create the royal icing by whisking the egg whites with the sugar.
  • Then decorate the cooled cookies with the royal icing.
  • You can also decorate with some glitter and silver or golden sprinkles.
