Adventure movies are for all ages and depending on what you are watching, it makes for a good light-hearted watch with your loved ones. The next time you curl in with a tub of popcorn, try these desserts alongside the flicks, which are handpicked by us based on the vibe of these adventure films.

The lines between adventure and fantasy are often blurred due to the exotic locations, plots, and the characters choosing violence or just having a penchant for rotten luck. But all of these make for a thrilling adventure where they chase or are chased after by bugs, zombies, or humongous creatures with no names. Most of the time the protagonists are multiple but in rare instances, they are alone and quite daring, and the whole movie is them living out their fantasies and doing out-of-character things that make for great entertainment. So, we decided to come up with desserts that capture the essence of some of the cult classics of the adventure genre.

Jumanji’s Mochi

A board game that unleashes terror on the world of people playing it sounds like a terrible idea, but that’s exactly what happens when two kids start playing it and out pops Alan Parrish (Robin Williams) who had been trapped in the game for several years when he had last played it. A mayhem and madness roller coaster follows, and the trio is forced to play the dangerous game to finish it. We feel a mochi fits it the best because just like the magical board game that unleashes a world of adventure, mochi itself transforms unexpectedly in the mouth, starting as a firm morsel and then gradually softening into a chewy texture. It usually has a filling with sweet bean paste and sometimes other variants, just as the children discover the mysterious Jumanji board game in their attic. It takes effort to make a mochi and so does finishing the game before the monsters from the game finish them off.

Knight and Day’s Lemon Meringue Pie

The light and bright yellow color of the lemon filling mirrors the lively, upbeat tone and fast pace of the thrilling adventure film, filled with romance as June (Cameron Diaz) gets swept up in an adventure courtesy of Roy (Tom Cruise) who is a secret agent. Like the unexpected sparks that fly between the main characters despite their very different personalities and approaches, the tart lemon filling is cut with the sweet, fluffy meringue topping, representing an unlikely but satisfying pairing. With its ability to lift one's mood with a burst of sunshine-yellow citrus flavor, the pie parallels how the film provides lighthearted escapism and romance through the adventures of Roy and June during its action-packed runtime.

Life of Pi’s Macaroons

A shipwreck in the middle of the ocean causes the protagonist, Pi to be stranded with a live tiger on a lifeboat. After spending an excruciating time at sea with the starving tiger, including adventures of surviving a predatory island, seeing the dazzling bioluminescent ocean after sundown, and facing off with the tiger, both survive miraculously. The original macaroons, with their simple coconut flavor and texture mirror Pi's resourcefulness in surviving at sea through humble means like drinking rainwater and eating raw fish to survive at sea. As Pi draws strength and insight from his spiritual beliefs, eating a coconut macaroon demands a similar strength for it is a subtle and not so extravagant dessert. Their small and modest size also reflects Pi's resilience and ability to endure immense hardship through quiet perseverance. The coconut in the macaroons also is a nod to his roots in Pondicherry lined with coconut trees and the washed-away remnants of his old life of worry-free days.

The Mummy’s Eclairs

Just as the classic film The Mummy introduces audiences to an ancient supernatural force awakened from its mysterious wrappings, so do the eclairs that hint at surprises hidden beneath their deceptively simple exterior. The long, thin golden pastry is reminiscent of the sands of Egypt and hints at the mummified linens concealing a magical power too long entombed. When indulged upon, the eclair treats the eater to a rich, creamy filling much like the protagonists of the film are rewarded for their daring pursuit with discoveries of long-buried treasures. Just as the plot of The Mummy is filled with suspenseful twists, so too do eclairs tease with their delicate appearance belying the unforeseen sweetness within.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty follows the story of a shy man named Walter Mitty who escapes from his mundane life through daydreams of adventure and heroism. Tired of always playing it safe, Walter decides to take a leap of faith and embark on an epic journey, to find a missing photograph, around the world to literally live out his dreams. Peppermint bark captures this theme of stepping outside one's comfort zone perfectly. The crisp chocolate bottom represents Walter's routine life, while the refreshing peppermint candy topping hints at the stimulating possibilities beyond. As Walter journeys to remote locations in his quest, peppermint bark's red and white stripes also evoke the scenic landscapes he encounters.
