These ‘The Big Bang Theory’-Inspired Cakes Are For The Biggest Nerd In Your Life

The show has been a crowd favorite for several years now, and your carefully crafted cake can be part of its enduring, laughter-inducing legacy.

The Big Bang Theory is one of those sitcoms that became a hit from the moment it premiered on our screens. Featuring a group of nerdy scientists and their quirky friends, it used the same formula of many sitcoms that came before it—that of telling the stories of the lives and friendships of a group of characters—but it stood out. With its awkward characters who were brilliant and relatable, it was using the traditional sitcom mold to do something entirely new and refreshing.

By adding Penny, the only ‘non-sciency’ character in the show, it was showing the clash of two different worlds, thereby tickling our funny bones. It has, over the years, earned a loyal fan following all over the globe. So here are some birthday cake ideas inspired by the show, for that TBBT fan in your life.

1. Periodic Table Cake

Bake a rectangular cake, keep it horizontal, and with frosting from a thin piping bag, make the periodic table. Either recreate the scientific chart as is, or make up your own elements, featuring the initials of the characters, or perhaps of yourself, the birthday person, and other friends in the group. For instance, use "Co" for Cooper (Sheldon), "Le" for Leonard, and "Ho" for Howard. Decorate the cake with colorful chemical elements and equations.

2. Comic Book Cake

Create a cake that resembles a comic book, incorporating elements from the show's comic book store, where the characters often hang out. For instance, use a rectangular cake and use edible ink to print out the cover page of one of your favorite comics. Then use fondant to craft the store’s elements, like figurines of superheroes or the open and close sign. Or, alternatively, create comic book panels featuring characters like Sheldon, Leonard, and Penny. Add speech bubbles with witty quotes from the show.

3. Star Wars Cake

Recreate the spherical Star Wars cake that Amy and Bernadette bake for the Star Wars marathon, paying tribute to the characters’, and your, love for the films. If you’re worried your cake will also roll over and meet the same fate as the ladies’ cake did, you can create the same cake but in a half, as a semicircle, with a strong, straight base so it will sit sturdy. Add gray fondant and then the detailing on top as seen on the cake in the show.

4. Character Specific Cake

Create a cake based on one of the characters on the show. For instance, if it’s a Sheldon Cooper cake you’re creating, cover the cake in red fondant and print his image on with edible ink. Then, use yellow and white fondant to create the word ‘Bazinga,’ based on Sheldon's famous red t-shirt. Add other phrases and elements, like his spot on the couch. Alternatively, make a cake that’s slightly dipped in the middle, cover it in red fondant, and then fill Cadbury Gems into the dip. Put a picture of Sheldon in there, recreating the scene where he keeps dipping in a pool of balls.

5. LEGO-themed Cake

Design a cake that resembles a LEGO set, as the characters often engage in building various LEGO creations. Craft fondant LEGO bricks, mini figures of the characters, and popular items from the show like the time machine or the infamous broken elevator. One can also find TBBT-themed lego figurines in the market, so buy those if you can, and add them as figurines, doing various activities like standing at a fondant board or looking into a fondant microscope.

6. The Soft Kitty Cake

Craft a cake shaped like a cat, inspired by the show's famous ‘Soft Kitty’ song. Decorate the cat-shaped cake with fur patterns and a cute face. Add fondant paw prints and a stethoscope, as the song is often sung by Penny to comfort Sheldon when he's sick. Around the sides of the cake, add the now-famous lyrics:

Soft kitty, warm kitty,
Little ball of fur
Happy kitty, sleepy kitty
Purr, purr purr

But perhaps you can add them in a different language, the way Amy sings for Sheldon in multiple languages.

7. The Agreement Cake

Design a cake that resembles a legal document, inspired by Sheldon and Leonard's ‘Roommate Agreement,’ or Sheldon and Amy’s ‘Relationship Agreement.’ Use fondant to create pages of the agreement, complete with detailed clauses and signatures of the characters. Add humorous quotes from the agreement on the cake.
